Local Markets
Everyday life in Messara is best experienced at the local markets.
• Friday morning – Timbaki Market
• Saturday morning – Mires Market
Both markets offer fresh fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, olives, herbs, honey, clothes, and household items. The markets usually start early in the morning and wind down around 13:00, so it’s best to go before noon.
Souvernirs and small shops
For souvenirs and small local shops, two nearby villages are worth a visit:
• Agia Galini – A cozy harbor village with narrow alleys, seaside cafés, and many small souvenir and artisan shops. Perfect for an afternoon walk.
• Matala – Famous for its hippie history and iconic caves, Matala also offers a lively atmosphere and a wide variety of souvenir shops.
Both villages combine shopping with a pleasant stroll by the sea.
Museums
Museum of Cretan Ethnology – Vori
A small and charming museum in the village of Vori, showcasing traditional Cretan rural life, customs, and everyday tools. It’s a lovely cultural stop if you want to understand local history and traditions at a human scale.
Typical opening hours are around 11:00 – 17:00, with a small entrance fee.

Archaeological Museum of Messara – Ampelouzos (near Gortyna)
A major new cultural highlight in the region, the Archaeological Museum of Messara opened recently (2023) and is becoming one of the most significant museums in southern Crete.
This modern museum tells the story of human presence in the Messara Plain from prehistoric times through the Christian era, with a rich collection of finds from local archaeological sites.
Highlights include:
• Displays on prehistoric settlements, the Greek and Roman periods, and early Christian times.
• Interactive digital exhibits and multimedia elements that help bring ancient stories to life.
• A well-designed exhibition layout in a contemporary space of nearly 3,000 m², with halls for permanent and temporary displays, a courtyard, event space, café, and museum shop.
• Located at the western edge of the archaeological site of Gortyna, so you can pair museum time with exploring the ancient city ruins nearby.
This makes it an excellent stop for history lovers and curious travelers alike, giving insight into how life and civilization evolved in the fertile Messara Plain over thousands of years.
Boat trips
From Kokkinos Pirgos
Daily boat trips depart from the harbor, organized by the local diving center, with destination Paximadia Island. Trips usually leave around 10:30 and return in the late afternoon, offering a relaxed day of swimming, snorkeling, and sea time.
From Agia Galini
Agia Galini offers a wide range of daily boat excursions, including trips to Paximadia Island, Preveli, and Matala, as well as fishing trips, sunset cruises, and private boat trips. Daily cruises also run along the coast to Agios Pavlos Beach and Triopetra Beach, making it an easy way to explore southern Crete by sea.
Coffee and Village Life
One of the simplest pleasures in the area is sitting at a kafenio (traditional coffee shop).
Order a Greek coffee or a cold freddo, watch village life go by, and enjoy the slow rhythm of southern Crete — especially in smaller villages.
Local Taverns
Messara is known for honest, traditional Cretan food. Look for small family-run taverns where locals eat. Dishes often include slow-cooked meats, fresh salads, local cheese, and seasonal vegetables. Portions are generous, and hospitality is warm and informal.
Olive Oil Tasting
The Messara plain is one of Crete’s most important olive-growing areas. Local olive oil factories in the region offer guided tours where visitors can learn about the olive oil production process — from harvest to pressing — followed by an olive oil tasting. It’s a simple and authentic way to experience one of Crete’s most essential products and traditions.
