Stay in Pitsidia — a peaceful village tucked between olive groves and the sea, just a short drive northeast of Matala and Kommos beach. While often passed through on the way to the coast, Pitsidia is much more than a crossroads — it’s a charming, sun-soaked spot where time slows down and everyday life feels authentically Cretan.

Along the main road and around the village square, you’ll find cozy taverns draped in bougainvillea, friendly cafés, and essential shops like a bakery, butcher, mini markets, and even a hairdresser. Venture off the main street to discover the quieter, older parts of the village — still full of life and character.

Pitsidia makes a perfect base for exploring the area’s beaches. Matala is just 4 km away, while Kommos beach is only a 30-minute walk through scenic countryside. Kalamaki lies just a little further down the coast. During summer, frequent buses connect Pitsidia to Matala, making it easy to explore without a car.

The village has deep roots. It’s the oldest in the area, and according to tradition, its name may trace back to Pisidia in Asia Minor — the homeland of soldiers who once settled here during Byzantine times.
