Stay in Vori
Stay in Vori — a village that feels like a living museum, where tradition, history, and timeless beauty meet in every alley. Located near the archaeological site of Phaistos, Vori is a protected traditional settlement, officially recognized by the Greek Ministry of Culture since 1978. Its narrow stone paths, blooming geraniums and bougainvillea, and centuries-old houses invite you to slow down and discover Crete’s soul.
Vori is divided into two parts: Katochori (Lower Village), the older, historic core, and Panochori (Upper Village), which has grown over the last century. Despite its growth, everything remains walkable. You’ll find bakeries, cafés, mini markets, tavernas, and even a public bus stop on the central square — all part of daily village life, mostly untouched by tourism.
Its name, according to legend, comes from Voros, the son of the mythic King Rhadamanthys of Phaistos. Others say it stems from its location “north” (voras in Greek) of Phaistos. Either way, the village’s history is undeniable: it has been continuously inhabited since the First Minoan period (c.1800 BC), as proven by archaeological finds from every era — Minoan, Roman, Byzantine, and beyond.
Vori also played an active role in Cretan revolutions and has long served as the capital of the Pirgiotissas region. In 1995, the village was twinned with the French communities of Camblanes and Meynac, reflecting its cultural importance beyond Crete.

🕊️ Beyond the Village
Just outside Vori lies the Monastery of Panagia Kardiotissa, founded in the 15th century and decorated with exceptional frescoes. According to local tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered under an olive tree here — believed to have healing powers.
Also nearby are the domed church of Agios Georgios Kontaras (12th century), Agia Fotini, and Agia Paraskevi — peaceful countryside chapels where time seems to stand still.
Whether you come for a day or a longer stay, Vori offers a unique window into Crete’s deep cultural layers — quiet, authentic, and profoundly rooted.
